Demand for recognition of transboundary rivers on World River Day in Kurigram

On the World River Day in Kurigram, the environmentalist organization Green Eco has raised the demand for the recognition of the inter-border rivers located inside Bangladesh. Demands were raised with placards on the bank of Dharla river near Kurigram town on Sunday (September 22) at 11 am.
Sanjay Chowdhury, director of Green Eco, Green Leader Mehdi Hasan Tamal, organizer Azizul Haque, Green Eco workers Shimu Khatun, Tariqul Islam Tamim, Rashidul Islam, Munna Rahman and others spoke on the occasion.
Speakers said that effective initiatives should be taken to de-pollution and encroachment of rivers within the country and to stop illegal sand mining. Besides, the neighboring country India violates the international river law and exploits the river upstream without considering the fair share of water, building dams and diverting the water, so the rivers of Bangladesh are losing their status as a downstream country. As a result nature and environment disaster has started.
Sanjay Chowdhury, director of Green Eco, said that there are 57 common or inter-border rivers with Bangladesh. Of these, 54 are with India. Apart from the list of these inter-country rivers, there are more than half a hundred rivers flowing inside Bangladesh. These rivers are losing their rights as they are not in the list. Bhati country is water deprived. As a result, on the World River Day, the recognition of these inter-boundary rivers has been raised nationally and internationally to demand a fair share.
