Untimely rains cause massive damage to mustard in Tarash, farmers are distraught

Local farmers in Sirajganj's Tarash upazila have suffered massive losses due to sudden and unseasonal rains. Field after field of mustard fields in various villages of the upazila were submerged in water due to continuous rains on Saturday. Farmers are now distraught.
Tarash's economy is mainly dependent on agriculture. After the monsoon rains receded, farmers sowed mustard in the land, hoping for a good harvest. But the sudden rain has cast a dark shadow on their hopes. The mustard plants in the fields are rotting due to waterlogging, as a result of which the amount of damage is increasing day by day.
Abdul Hakim, a farmer from Debipur village, said, "We have invested a lot in mustard this year. But everything has been destroyed by this rain. If we do not get help from the government, it will be difficult to recover from this loss."
A local agricultural official said that work is underway to assess the extent of mustard damage across the upazila. It is initially estimated that crops on several hundred acres of land have been damaged. He said, “Proposals will be sent to help the affected farmers and efforts are being made to provide assistance as soon as possible.”
Meanwhile, there is extreme concern among the farming community. Because mustard is one of their seasonal crops, from which they raise capital for subsequent cultivation. Now that prospect has been lost, many are afraid of falling into debt.
Locals say that if the waterlogging is not resolved quickly and emergency relief assistance is not provided to the affected, the livelihood of the farmers will be in extreme crisis.
This untimely rain in Tarash has once again reminded us how deep the uncertainty of farmers’ lives can be due to the impact of natural disasters. Now the farming community is looking to the government for sympathy.
