A wave of controversy and dissatisfaction has emerged surrounding Abu Taher Talukder, the BNP’s preliminary prospective candidate for the Netrokona-5 (Purbadhala) parliamentary constituency. The situation escalated after several alleged obscene and objectionable videos of him went viral on social media, sparking anger among local party leaders and activists.
According to party sources, activists accuse Abu Taher Talukder of rehabilitating collaborators of the former ruling regime in exchange for money during the fascist period, placing controversial individuals in various BNP committees, and allegedly encouraging criminal activities by party workers while planning to shift responsibility onto rival political parties. They further claim that the circulation of multiple videos reflecting moral degradation has seriously damaged the party’s image.
There are also allegations that following the fall of the Hasina government on August 5 last year, Abu Taher accumulated vast wealth through questionable means. During this period, he reportedly became the owner of houses in both Netrokona and Uttara in the capital, according to local discussions.
Party activists warn that nominating a controversial figure under the Sheaf of Paddy symbol could cost BNP a seat widely considered winnable. They are demanding the nomination of a widely acceptable and controversy-free candidate in Purbadhala to ensure party unity and electoral victory.
Responding to the allegations, Abu Taher Talukder dismissed them as false and baseless. “A group of ill-motivated individuals is spreading fabricated allegations against me. These tactics will not stop my victory. I will win the election by a huge margin,” he said. He also claimed that the party’s Acting Chairman and Secretary General were fully aware of the matter before granting him the nomination.
He further alleged that disappointed nomination aspirants are deliberately spreading edited videos and propaganda on social media, accusing internal party rivals of orchestrating the smear campaign.
Meanwhile, another video circulating on social media allegedly shows Abu Taher Talukder encouraging party activists to engage in criminal activities and promising to suppress any legal consequences. The video has triggered widespread criticism and condemnation across the constituency.
