A mortar shell was recovered once again in Tetulia upazila of Panchagarh district. The abandoned mortar shell was found at a scrap (junk) shop in Ranchandi Bazar under Tetulia Sadar Union.
The incident took place on Tuesday (February 10) at noon. Locals noticed a mortar shell–like object at the “Bhai Bhai” scrap shop and immediately informed the national emergency service number 999.
According to police and local sources, around 1:30 pm the object was spotted within about 800 yards inside Bangladesh territory from border pillar 446/3-S, under the jurisdiction of Banchandi BOP of Panchagarh Battalion (18 BGB). Upon receiving the information, Tetulia Model Police Station personnel rushed to the scene and recovered the mortar shell, taking it into police custody.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tetulia Model Police Station, Rashedul Islam, said that police promptly responded after receiving the information and seized the mortar shell–like object. Higher authorities have been informed, and the Bangladesh Army’s bomb disposal unit has also been notified. Necessary measures are currently underway.
Preliminary assumptions suggest that the mortar shell might have entered the country along with stone consignments imported from India or Bhutan. Previously, similar mortar shells were recovered from stone yards at Banglabandha Land Port and were later defused by authorities.
