Despite announcing that they would not officially participate in the annual election of the Lakshmipur District Bar Association (2026-27 session), 8 candidates of the Bangabandhu Awami Ajni Parishad have won various posts. On the other hand, the Nationalist Lawyers Forum (supported by BNP) has won 6 important posts including the president and general secretary in the election. However, no candidate from the Awami League panel contested the posts of president and general secretary. No one from the Jamaat-supported panel could win the election, which resulted in their candidates returning empty-handed for the second consecutive time.
On February 24, at around 3 am, Chief Election Commissioner Advocate AKM Humayun Kabir announced the final results. Monirul Islam Howlader of the Nationalist Lawyers Forum has been elected president for the second consecutive time. He defeated his nearest rival, Nayeb Amir Nazir Ahmed of the District Jamaat, by getting 232 votes.
BNP-backed Rafiq Ullah won the post of general secretary with 216 votes, while his nearest rival, Nur Uddin Babul of the Jamaat panel, got 146 votes. Among other posts, Abdul Majid from the BNP-backed panel won the post of vice-president, Fakhrul Islam Jewell as deputy general secretary, Muhammad Mosharraf Hossain as library secretary and Zafar Ahmed as member.
The 8 winners from the Awami League-backed Bangabandhu Awami Lawyers Council are vice-president Abul Khair Bhuiyan, deputy general secretary Chand Moni Mohan, cultural secretary Jamal Uddin, auditor Rakibul Hasan Apu and member Azhar Uddin Rocky, Yusuf Manik, Abdullah Al Noman and Abdur Rahim Manik. In addition, an independent candidate named Nurul Huda Murad won the post of member.
Earlier, on January 26, a notice was given from the district committee of the Awami Lawyers Council not to participate in the election. Despite the organization's decision, Awami League-backed lawyers contested for other positions except for the posts of president and general secretary from personal or strategic positions.
Chief Election Commissioner AKM Humayun Kabir said that voting was held in a very festive atmosphere from 9 am to 4 pm on Tuesday. Out of the 382 voters of the association, 370 exercised their right to vote.
