The joy of marriage turned into grief in an instant. Several members of the same family, including the newlyweds, lost their lives in a horrific road accident on their way to start a new life. As a result, where the wedding reception was supposed to take place, relatives are now waiting for the burial of their loved ones. This heartbreaking incident took place in the Belai Bridge area of Rampal Upazila.
Among the deceased are newlyweds Abidur Rahman Sabbir (28) and Marzia Akter Mitu (24). Mitu was sitting next to her husband in her wedding attire on the way to her new home. She had henna on her hand, a brown Banarasi on her body, earrings in her ears and a bangle in her hand—everything was there, but there was no heartbeat. Her life was cut short in the road accident before her new life could begin.
Mitu's body was taken from Khulna Medical College Hospital to Naksha village in Koyra Upazila in an ambulance without an autopsy late on Thursday (March 12). The bodies of his younger sister Lamia (12), grandmother Rashida Begum (75) and grandmother Anwara (70) returned with him.
On the other hand, the body of groom Sabbir reached Shelabunia area of Mongla Upazila in Bagerhat on the same night. His father Abdur Razzak (70), mother Anjumanara (60), sister Oishi (30), son-in-law Samiul Alam (42), elder sister-in-law Putul (30) and some children of the family—Alif, Iram and Abdullah Sunny (12)—were killed along with him. In addition, the body of microbus driver Naeem Sheikh (31) was also taken to his native area.
The dreams of two families were shattered in an instant in this accident. Sabbir's elder brother Ashraful Alam Johnny is stunned by the loss of so many family members at once. Sabbir's father Abdur Razzak is a locally known social figure and the president of Ward No. 8 of the Mongla Municipality BNP, so people from different classes and professions are flocking to the area to express their condolences to the grieving family.
It is learned that the funeral of the deceased is scheduled to be held at the Mongla Upazila ground after Friday prayers on Friday (March 13). Prime Minister Tarique Rahman expressed deep shock over the incident.
According to family members, after the wedding ceremony on Thursday, Mitu left for her in-laws' house in a microbus from Naksha village in Koyra upazila of Khulna at around 11:30 am. She was accompanied by her younger sister, grandmother and maternal grandmother. On the other hand, groom Sabbir was heading towards Mongla in Bagerhat with his family members.
When the microbus reached the Belai Bridge in Rampal, it collided head-on with a Navy staff bus coming from the opposite direction in the rain. In an instant, both vehicles were twisted and twisted. Many lost their lives on the spot, and the seriously injured were taken to the hospital, one by one, and the lamp of life went out.
A joyful wedding procession instantly turned into a mourning procession. Where there were preparations to welcome the new bride, now there are only tears and waiting in the eyes of the relatives - the last farewell of their loved ones.
