A temporary bamboo bridge built with local funds in Barisal's Ujirpur Municipality has been officially inaugurated by Municipal BNP President Md. Shahidul Islam Khan. Discussions have started on the issue after pictures and videos of the bridge inauguration with red ribbon cutting, drum music and distribution of sweets went viral on social media.
According to local sources, the bridge, which is about 200 feet long, was built to facilitate the movement of people in Wards 7 and 8 of Ujirpur Municipality. Local residents built it using bamboo and betel leaves at their own expense.
During the inauguration of the bridge on Thursday afternoon, the area was decorated with flowers and balloons. Along with the red ribbon cutting, drum music and Bayati songs were organized. Later, sweets were distributed among the men and women present.
Mixed reactions on social media
After the pictures and videos of the inauguration went viral on social media, there were mixed reactions.
Some criticized the formal inauguration of a temporary bamboo bridge. Their question is how effective a temporary bridge will be instead of a permanent solution to the area's long-standing communication problems.
On the other hand, many praised the collective initiative of local residents. According to them, it is a positive initiative to temporarily reduce the traffic problem by building a bridge with their own funds until a government or permanent solution is found.
'I did not know about any advance preparations'
Regarding the incident, Uzirpur Municipal BNP President Md. Shahidul Islam Khan said that he was not aware of any advance preparations for the inauguration of the bridge.
He said that men, women and students of the area had been suffering from traffic problems for a long time. Due to this, the local residents themselves built the bridge using bamboo and betel leaves.
The BNP leader said that the locals called him there on Thursday afternoon. When one and a half to two hundred people present held the red ribbon and requested him to cut it, he cut the ribbon.
He said that the arrangements for singing and distributing sweets were also initiated by the local residents.
