A human chain was held in Sreepur of Gazipur over allegations of harassment, extortion and threats concerning compensation for land acquired for the construction of the Bormi Bridge and connecting road.
The protest was held at around 11am on Tuesday (September 1) in the Paital Bari area near Bormi Bazar. Several hundred local residents, including men and women, took part in the human chain.
Speakers at the event demanded that compensation for the acquired land be ensured for the actual owners. They also called for a neutral investigation into allegations of harassment, unlawful demands for money and threats, and demanded legal action against those found responsible.
The affected residents alleged that they have been facing various forms of harassment over the compensation money for the acquired land. They urged the authorities concerned to take immediate steps to resolve the issue.
Responding to the allegations, Mobarak Hossain and Hridoy said they have property within the acquired land, although they are not currently in possession of it. They denied the allegations of extortion and harassment, saying that ownership and compensation should be determined strictly according to the law and valid documents.
The affected residents called for an impartial investigation and a quick resolution to ensure that the rightful landowners receive their compensation.
