The Banda Ushan Ittehadul Ulama Parishad has expressed deep concern and strong condemnation over the inhumane torture of a mosque imam and his veiled wife overnight in Durgapur upazila of Netrakona district. In a press release on Saturday (October 19), the organization said that this heinous and barbaric incident is not just an attack on an individual, but it is a direct attack on religion, humanity and justice.
The statement said that it is very sad and worrying that the perpetrators have not been arrested even after the incident. The silence of the administration and the lack of effective action are questionable. The statement also said that such brutal torture on the imam and his family overnight is unthinkable in any civilized society.
The leaders of the Parishad said that insulting and torturing an imam means an attack on the dignity of the entire Muslim society. They called for swift and strict legal action in the incident. The council raised three demands—first, all the criminals involved in the incident should be arrested quickly and given exemplary punishment. Second, arrangements should be made for the safety, treatment and rehabilitation of the victim Imam and his family. Third, the administration should take effective steps to ensure the safety of religious figures and prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future.
The statement also said that it is the demand of the hour to bring the criminals to justice in the interest of establishing justice. Calling on the government and administration, the council said—the public's trust should be restored by taking visible steps after conducting a proper investigation into this incident.
The statement was signed on behalf of the organization by President Mufti Abdul Aziz Qasemi and Secretary Mufti Noor-e-Alam Shahin.
