Police have arrested Tipu Sultan, Chairman of Tularampur Union Parishad and local Awami League leader, in a controversial sabotage case in Narail district. On Tuesday (November 5), Narail Sadar Police Station conducted a raid and arrested him from his house around 11 am.
Confirming the arrest, Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Sajedul Islam said, “Chairman Tipu Sultan has been arrested in a case filed in connection with the attack on anti-discrimination students and the public. He will be produced in court today after the legal process is over.”
According to sources in the case, on August 4, 2024, a protest march of the anti-discrimination student movement took out in Malibagh area of Narail Sadar demanding the fall of the fascist Awami League government. There were incidents of shooting, bomb explosions and attacks in the procession. On September 10, Sadar Upazila BNP General Secretary Sheikh Mostafa Al-Mujahidur Rahman Palash filed a case with Sadar Police Station in connection with the incident. The case names 90 people, along with an unknown number of 400 to 500 others.
One of the accused in the case is Tipu Sultan, chairman of Tularampur Union Parishad and Awami League leader. According to the police, he had been pursuing a policy of domination and repression against political opponents in the area for a long time. It is alleged that he abused his power and tortured people from minority communities and was involved in multiple attacks and false cases against BNP and Jamaat leaders and activists.
Meanwhile, his arrest has received mixed reactions in the area. A section of the local BNP and the general public say that finally an "influential" accused has come under the law. However, local Awami League leaders claim that this is a politically motivated case.
The Narail Sadar Police Station has informed that a remand application may be filed if Tipu Sultan is handed over to the court, because several other important accused in the case are still absconding.
