A hotelier named Ayub Khan has been accused of beating up a hotelier in the Dakshin Namagenda area of Savar, a suburb of Dhaka, over a previous dispute and extortion demand. It is learnt that Shahadat Hossain, the other party, was also injured in the same incident. Both sides have filed counter-complaints at Savar Model Police Station in this incident.
According to the complaint source, Ayub Khan, a resident of Dakshin Namagenda area, has been running a business called 'Bhai Bhai Khabar Hotel' for a long time. He was standing in front of his hotel at around 9 pm on Tuesday. At that time, due to a previous dispute, Shahadat Hossain, Shakib, Mokbel and 10-12 other people from the same area allegedly attacked him with country-made weapons. The attackers beat him up indiscriminately with iron rods and sticks, injuring him in various parts of his body. At one stage, his shirt was torn and about 35 thousand taka from the chest pocket of the shirt was also allegedly snatched.
Later, with the help of locals, the injured Ayub Khan was taken to Savar Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
Locals alleged that since August 5, Shahadat and his brother Shakib have been trying to exert influence in the area through extortion. It is alleged that they are using the names of various leaders to extort money from local businessmen. Locals said that Shakib appeared in the magistrate's court a few days ago in connection with the extortion case and even went to jail.
Local sources also said that recently, when Md. Amin Khan took the initiative to start a new garage, Shahadat and his associates demanded a ransom of two lakh taka before the inauguration. It is also alleged that when they did not receive the extortion, they went to Amin Khan's father's hotel and beat up his elderly father to demand money.
However, Shakib Khan filed a counter-complaint with the police station regarding the incident. It is claimed that the clash started over an incident of obscene remarks directed at a neighboring garment worker, Riya Moni. They allege that Shahadat Hossain was beaten up and seriously injured for protesting the incident. He was also treated at Savar Upazila Health Complex.
When the locals protested during the incident, Shahadat and some of his associates managed to escape, but Shahadat was detained by the locals. It is reported that he was also beaten up later. The locals claim that a counter-complaint was filed later to take the incident to a different category.
In this regard, the police of Savar Model Police Station said that the complaints from both sides have been received and the matter will be investigated and necessary legal action will be taken.
