2 policemen sentenced to death, 3 to life in Abu Sayeed murder case

The International Crimes Tribunal Bangladesh-2 has announced its verdict in the case of the shooting death of Abu Sayeed, a student of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur, during the anti-discrimination student movement. Two policemen have been sentenced to death and three others to life imprisonment in the case under discussion.
A three-member judicial panel led by the chairman of the tribunal, Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, announced the verdict on Thursday (April 9) afternoon. The other two members of the panel were Judge Md. Manjurul Bashid and Judge Nur Mohammad Shahriar Kabir.
The two policemen sentenced in the verdict are Amir Hossain and Sujan. In addition, three more policemen have been sentenced to life imprisonment. The other accused have been sentenced to different terms.
Meanwhile, university teachers Mashiur Rahman and Asaduzzaman Mandal have been sentenced to 10 years in prison in the verdict of the case. At the same time, former Begum Rokeya University Chhatra League president Pomel Barua was sentenced to 10 years in prison and five other leaders to three years.
The verdict in the case of a student being shot dead in public has sparked widespread debate in the country. Those concerned believe that the verdict sends an important message against the culture of impunity.
