A legal notice has been sent demanding action against those responsible for the death of six newborns and the illness of several children at the maternity and neonatal ward of Ad-Din Hospital in the capital's Moghbazar and compensation for the affected families. At the same time, instructions have been sought to strengthen security, emergency medical care and monitoring systems in maternal and neonatal wards of all hospitals in the country.
Supreme Court lawyer Ishrat Hasan said that the notice was sent to the Secretary of the Health Services Department, the Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services, the Director (Hospitals and Clinics) and the Director of Ad-Din Hospital on Friday (May 29). The notice states that this recent incident has created concern, grief and anger across the country. According to the complaint, several newborns suddenly fell ill late at night and they started crying, vomiting, having difficulty breathing and their physical condition rapidly deteriorated. At the same time, several pregnant mothers also fell ill.
The notice further states that adequate emergency medical services, round-the-clock monitoring and rapid medical assistance were not ensured in critical situations. Questions have also been raised about the presence and promptness of the responsible medical personnel. It has also been alleged that there has been a delay in quickly transferring seriously ill newborns to advanced medical centers.
It has been demanded to identify those responsible for this incident and take departmental and criminal action, ensure compensation for the affected families and make emergency medical protocols mandatory for newborn and maternal care in all government and private hospitals in the country. It has also been called for the formation of a strong monitoring system for regular supervision of the activities of the hospitals. The noticeees have been asked to inform the public about the steps taken within 72 hours.
