The campus of Jahangirnagar University (JU) has become tense over allegations of rape in jungle. More than a thousand students held a torchlight procession on Wednesday night demanding the speedy arrest of the accused and strengthening security on the campus.
According to the complaint, around 11 pm on Tuesday, a man tried to take a student to a secluded place by wrapping a cloth around her neck in the area next to the university's abandoned old Fazilatunnesa Hall. At that time, passersby in the area quickly came forward and rescued the student. She was later taken to the university's medical center. The accused fled the scene.
Later, the university's security branch was informed that the accused was initially identified as an outsider after reviewing CCTV footage.
Protesting the incident, students started a protest march from the Battala area around 10 pm on Wednesday. Later, it turned into a torchlight procession with the participation of female students. After the procession, the students took a stand in front of the proctor's office and made five demands.
Their demands include arrest of the accused within 24 hours, resignation of the proctor for the failure of the security system, accountability of the proctoral body, formation of a rapid response security team and appointment of female security personnel.
The incident has created concern across the university. Students have demanded quick and effective action from the administration to ensure a safe environment on the campus.
