The Ministry of Education has taken a major reform initiative to make the country's higher education more work-oriented and skill-based. According to the new draft model, plans have been taken to cancel or rearrange honors courses in about six subjects including Bengali, history, and philosophy.
According to relevant sources, these subjects may be coordinated with other related subjects instead of keeping them as separate degrees. At the same time, importance is being given to technology-based and market-demand-based subjects.
In the new plan, various technology-based skills including artificial intelligence (AI), cyber security, outsourcing are being added to the curriculum. In addition, initiatives are being taken to introduce freelancing training from the college level, establish career centers, and teach seven foreign languages.
A top official of the Ministry of Education said that the matter has not been finalized yet. A final decision will be taken after taking the opinions of all stakeholders.
Meanwhile, according to educationists, the existing education structure is not compatible with employment in many cases, resulting in increasing educated unemployment. This new initiative is expected to play a role in reducing that gap.
The government has also planned to introduce a new curriculum from 2028, which will include new subjects including technical education, sports and culture, and “Learning with Happiness.” It also plans to reduce the pressure on students by reducing the duration of public examinations.
This reform program in the education sector is being seen as the beginning of a major transformation in the country’s higher education system.
