The students started protesting after the sudden closure of the private 'Global University' in Barisal. The notice announcing the indefinite leave was put up on the notice board of the university on Thursday afternoon. After that, the students started protesting to demand the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Enamul Haque.
The founder of the university is Jahangir Kabir Nanak, a member of the Awami League presidium and former textile and jute minister. His wife Anjuman Ara Nargis is the Chairperson of the Board of Governors. The university is housed in two rented buildings on Sher-e-Bangla Road, adjacent to the city's central bus terminal. Registrar AKM Enayet Hossain said that the university established in 2016 has more than 600 students in six departments.
Yesterday at 3 pm in the administrative building, it was seen that hundreds of students were protesting with 8 point demands including the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor. In a room on the ground floor, 8-10 teachers are discussing control of the situation.
At this time, Hasibul Islam, a third-year student of the law department, said that classes started last Wednesday after being closed due to the anti-discrimination student movement. Law department exams were going on in the second building on Thursday. At around 12 noon, a notice was given announcing the sudden closure of the educational program.
They alleged that the staff led by deputy registrar Neyamul Islam forced them out of the classroom. The second building was locked, keeping three teachers inside. During this time, some students were also molested. After that they started protesting. Realizing that the situation was hostile, the deputy registrar and the associate employees ran away. The students also complained that when the vice-chancellor was called, he called them miscreants.
In this regard, the registrar AKM Enayet Hosne told Samakal that they have come to know through various means that there are two groups among the students. Due to them, an unstable environment can be created in the university at any time. From this, the education program has been temporarily closed. It has nothing to do with political or government collapse.
He also said that the Vice-Chancellor is in the capital. Constantly in touch with the Vice-Chancellor regarding the demands of the students. A few demands have already been accepted.
