Kerosene price hiked by 10 taka!

Published: 01:22 1 June 2025
The government has announced new fuel oil prices for the month of June, which will come into effect from June 1, 2025. Although the prices of diesel, petrol and octane have been reduced this time, the price of kerosene has increased by 10 taka. In May, the price of kerosene per liter was 104 taka, which has been increased to 114 taka for the month of June.
Usually, the prices of diesel and kerosene are adjusted together. But this time, a different picture has been seen in the price determination. The price of diesel has been reduced from 104 taka to 102 taka, the price of petrol from 121 taka to 118 taka, and the price of octane from 125 taka to 122 taka. Only kerosene has been increased.
When asked about the reason for the increase in kerosene prices, an official from the Ministry of Energy said that since the price of kerosene is lower than diesel, many unscrupulous traders mix it and make adulterated oil. The price of kerosene has been increased mainly to prevent this adulteration. Moreover, keeping the price of kerosene equal to that of diesel reduces the demand for kerosene, which affects the market.
The most affected by this decision will be low-income families and users of small riverboats, who rely on kerosene. Many are criticizing this price increase as discriminatory and an additional burden on the low-income population.
Incidentally, the government is re-pricing fuel oil prices every month in line with the international market. Ministry sources said that the prices of LNG and crude oil may also be reconsidered in the future.
