Under the Information Technology Act, 2021, popular messaging app WhatsApp suspended the accounts of more than 8.5 million Indian users last month. Meta takes strict action against users who violate the rules.
The company disclosed this information in its monthly compliance report for September.
In the past, WhatsApp has banned millions of accounts multiple times for abusing Indian users. According to the new report, WhatsApp has actively closed 16.58 lakh accounts. A total of 8,161 complaints were received in September, of which 97 cases were directly dealt with.
In August, WhatsApp suspended 84.58 lakh Indian accounts, of which 16.61 lakh accounts were actively banned. But this time that number has increased to over 85 lakhs.
According to the Information Technology Act 2021, social media platforms with more than 50,000 users are required to submit a compliance report every month. In this report, the user's complaint, the action taken by the app and the guidelines of the appeal committee should be mentioned in detail.
According to WhatsApp's statement, special importance is being given to the transparency of the app and the security of the users. Now users can report harmful content directly from the app. Necessary measures have been taken to prevent the spread of fake information and strengthen cyber security.
WhatsApp has requested users to refrain from spreading false information, avoid cybercrime and promptly report harmful content to maintain transparency on the platform.
