The US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) said that the Covid-19 virus is more likely to spread from a lab in Wuhan, China, than from a natural source. AFP reported from Washington that this new assessment was released after current CIA chief Ratcliffe took office. Ratcliffe said, “Reaching the right conclusion about the origin of Covid-19 is one of our main goals.”
A CIA spokesman said on Saturday, “We believe that the Covid-19 virus is more likely to spread from research sources. However, our assessment is still given with low confidence.” The US official said that this new assessment was made at the direction of former CIA Director William Burns.
Meanwhile, some US agencies such as the FBI and the Department of Energy are supporting the lab-leak theory. However, most members of the intelligence community still support the theory of a natural source. Proponents of the lab-leak theory argue that the virus could have been accidentally released from a laboratory, such as the Wuhan Institute of Virology. They point out that Wuhan is a major center for coronavirus research and that the virus could have been released unintentionally during the research.
On the other hand, the natural origin theory suggests that COVID-19 jumped from bats or other animals to humans. Proponents of this theory say that this is a common occurrence in the biological world.
The argument in favor of the lab-leak theory is that Wuhan is located about 1,600 kilometers from the natural habitat of bats. This makes it more likely that the virus could have spread from the lab.
