The Pentagon has said that it may take at least six months to remove underwater mines laid in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. It is reported that US lawmakers were informed of the matter in a secret meeting.
At the meeting held on Tuesday, Defense Department officials said that identifying and removing mines scattered in various parts of the strait is a complex and time-consuming process. The task has become even more difficult due to the lack of specific information on where the mines have been laid.
At the meeting, lawmakers also want to know in detail about the military strategy surrounding Iran, the potential costs and the goals of the war. In addition, the attack on an educational institution area at the beginning of the war was also highlighted. However, it is reported that no clear answers have been found on these issues.
Earlier, it is believed that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the elite branch of Iran's defense forces, has placed underwater mines in various parts of the Strait of Hormuz. It is estimated that at least a dozen mines have been laid in this waterway, which is important for international trade.
However, it is known that there is no complete record of where these mines have been placed. As a result, the biggest challenge after the ceasefire has become identifying the locations of the mines and their safe removal.
According to analysts, a delay in removing mines in the Strait of Hormuz could have a major impact on global energy supplies and maritime trade, as it is considered one of the world's most important waterways.
