The court has ordered that Matiur Rahman, a former member of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), involved in the much-discussed 'goat case', be sent to jail in a weapons case after a three-day remand. The court of Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akhter in Dhaka issued this order on Saturday (January 18).
Matiur Rahman was arrested along with his wife from the Bashundhara residential area of the capital on Tuesday night. The DB police recovered illegal weapons and 24 rounds of bullets from him. Later, a case was filed against him at Bhatara Police Station under the Arms Act.
On Eid-ul-Adha 2023, Matiur Rahman's son Mushfiqur Rahman came into the spotlight after buying a goat for Tk 1.2 million from Sadiq Agro in Dhaka. Since then, various questions have been raised about the luxurious lifestyle, wealth, and corruption of Matiur Rahman and his family.
The ACC investigation led to the freezing of four apartments in Dhaka, many lands, 134.4 million taka deposited in 116 bank accounts, and 23 BO accounts in the names of Matiur Rahman and his family.
In addition, a ban was imposed on Matiur's first wife Laila Kaniz and her son Ahmed Taufiqur Rahman from traveling abroad.
The ACC investigation also found evidence of involvement in corruption, money laundering, and gold smuggling against Matiur Rahman's girlfriend and another NBR official, Arzina Khatun.
In this incident, which started with the 'sheep scandal', the image of Matiur Rahman and his family's huge wealth and corruption is now at the center of public discussion.
