Nahid Islam and Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan were taken away in white clothes during the anti-discrimination student movement in July. They were missing from their families for months. Finally, on Wednesday (February 12), they found out the truth about their horrific experience when they visited the Mirror Room with Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government.
Nahid and Asif said that they were locked in the torture cell of the DGFI. Some features of the rooms they were in are still intact. “I remember this room clean. There was a toilet like a basin on one side. The part in the middle of the wall has been demolished and repainted. But this is the place where I was locked up day after day.”
“There was an exhaust fan on the top of the wall of my room. I remember that heat, that darkness—it all. Standing here today, I understand that this is the place.” There were many more names on the list of those who went missing to suppress the July movement. However, many have not yet returned. Human rights organizations say that this visit is a big step towards uncovering the truth.
No statement has been received from the DGFI or the relevant authorities on this incident yet. However, human rights organizations claim that the allegations that have been raised about the secret detention center for a long time need to be investigated more deeply.
