Ahead of the upcoming national elections, Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has called for an open debate on policies with political opponents. He said that the discussion should focus on what policies can be most effective for the welfare of the people of the country.
In a post on his verified Facebook page at 9:24 pm on Monday (February 2), Dr. Shafiqur Rahman wrote, “I welcome my opponents. Let’s compete in a battle of ideas—to prove who can serve the people of this country better.”
In the post, he also said that the main goal of political discussion should be to debate on policies, listen to the people, and formulate the best policies for the people of Bangladesh. In his words, Jamaat-e-Islami is highlighting a different trend of discussion and listening to the people through daily engagement.
Emphasizing welfare-oriented politics as opposed to violence, he mentioned that people have rejected violence in the past, are doing it now and will do it in the future.
Sharing this post by Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, Abu Sadiq Kayem, VP of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU), commented that DUCSU is interested in organizing such a debate.
However, no details are yet known about the structure or format in which this debate can be held. No official response has been received from other political parties so far.
It is worth noting that the 13th National Parliament elections and referendum are scheduled to be held on February 12. The candidates are currently busy campaigning ahead of the elections.
