BNP is a centrist party positioned ‘to the right of the Left and to the Left of the Right’: Law Minister

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md. Anisul Huq has described the BNP as a centrist political party. In his words, the BNP is a political party that positions itself "to the right of the Left and to the Left of the Right." He made these remarks on Thursday, September 17, while speaking as the chief guest at the Sri Krishna Janmashtami festival organized by the Dhaka Bar Association.

The Law Minister stated that the BNP is committed to upholding the dignity of Bangladesh's red-and-green flag and its green passport. He presented this view at the event as his own interpretation of the BNP's political stance.

He also spoke about the relationship between religion and politics. The Law Minister observed that religion is a matter of personal faith and reverence, as well as a significant part of one's private life; however, religion should not be exploited in the political arena to incite conflict or bloodshed among people. He further claimed that the BNP opposes both irreligion and the "commodification of religion."

The Law Minister stated that their goal is to build a Bangladesh where people of diverse religions and communities can coexist harmoniously. He also emphasized the importance of creating a safe and livable country for future generations.

Addressing the lawyers present at the event, he remarked that when discharging professional duties in court, a lawyer's professional identity should take precedence over their religious identity. He noted that when standing before the court, everyone performs their duties as a "lawyer in a black coat" rather than as a Muslim, Hindu, or Christian.

The Law Minister urged lawyers to play a positive role in combating communalism and discrimination in both social and professional life. He also stressed the importance of people from different communities working together while maintaining religious harmony.

Officials from various levels of the judiciary attended the event, which was presided over by Dhaka Bar Association President Md. Anwar Zahid Bhuiyan. Among them were Senior District and Sessions Judge Md. Rafiqul Islam, Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md. Shahjahan Kabir, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman, and Acting Chief Judicial Magistrate Md. Mahbubur Rahman.
