Leaders and activists of the banned organization Chhatra League held a surprise procession at midnight in Juldha Union of Karnaphuli Upazila of Chittagong. The procession took place at around 11:30 pm on Friday (May 17) in the Sultan Baper Bari area of Ward No. 7 of the union. According to eyewitnesses, 12-15 youths suddenly started the procession chanting slogans like 'Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu', 'Sheikh Hasina will come to the country, in the guise of a hero' etc. The entire procession lasted 3 to 4 minutes.
The procession was led by a youth named Faisal, who is the nephew of former Juldha Union Chhatra League president Md. Musa and the son of Awami League leader Mohammad Nur of the same area. Notably, Mohammad Nur was arrested on February 11.
Immediately after the incident, the Karnaphuli Police Station conducted a drive and arrested three people. Among them, one named Farhan, 22, has been identified, who is the son of the recently arrested controversial figure Abdul Malek alias Ghora Malek. However, the identities of the rest have not been revealed yet.
Local sources said that some teenagers and young men held a procession in the style of Chhatra League for fun and made a video of it and shared it on Facebook. When the video went viral on social media, it came to the attention of the administration and the police quickly launched a raid.
In this regard, Karnaphuli Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Muhammad Sharif said, “We conducted a raid after receiving information about the incident and arrested some people. The raid is still ongoing. Details will be announced later.”
