Will there be no A. League symbol in the upcoming elections? EC warns

Published: 05:28 3 September 2025
Election Commissioner Brigadier General (Retd.) Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah said that if the activities of any party are suspended, they will not be able to participate in the election with their party symbol. However, time will tell whether there is an opportunity to stand independently without a symbol.
In this situation, if the suspension order of the Awami League is not lifted in the upcoming 13th National Parliament election, they will lose the right to the party symbol. Although the EC did not directly mention the name of the party, its warning is clear about the suspended party.
In addition, the armed forces have been included in the list of law enforcement agencies in the amendment to the Representation of the People Order. The court has declared a fugitive, officials holding 50% or more shares in government institutions and people holding profitable positions will not be able to participate in the election. The candidate's security deposit has been increased to Tk 50,000, a 'no' vote system for single candidates, the obligation of the party symbol in coalition elections, EVMs have been canceled, election posters have been banned and the code of conduct on social media has been tightened.
As the elections approached, the EC made it clear that there would be no exemptions for suspended parties.
