A grand Ulama-Mashaykh conference was held in Durgapur, Netrokona, under the joint initiative of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Bangladesh Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam. The conference, organized at the central Shahid Minar premises of Durgapur Municipality on Sunday afternoon, called for the restoration of democracy, establishment of voting rights and unity of the clerical community. BNP's Central Executive Committee Legal Affairs Secretary and Nationalist Lawyers Forum Secretary General Barrister Kaiser Kamal was present as the chief guest at the conference.
In his speech as the chief guest, Barrister Kaiser Kamal said, "The clerics and ulama are the true guides of the country and the nation. The people of this country have not forgotten the oppression and torture that has been inflicted on them in the last one and a half decades." He also said that the patriotic clerical community and political forces must stand in the same row and join a united movement to restore the people's voting rights and democracy. BNP and Jamiat-e-Ulama-e-Islam are together on the streets in the struggle for the rights of the common man and no conspiracy can break this national unity.
Since morning, the central Shahid Minar premises of Susang Durgapur Upazila were filled with processions, slogans and crowds. A large number of BNP and Jamiat leaders and activists and Ulama-Mashaykhs from different unions and wards of the upazila participated in the conference. The entire area turned into an ocean of people, which the organizers believe is a reflection of the widespread public support for the conference.
Speakers at the conference raised several important demands. These include ensuring a free, fair and impartial national election, unconditional release of all clerics and activists imprisoned for political reasons, breaking the syndicate and bringing the prices of daily necessities within the purchasing power of the common man, and removing all government obstacles to protecting the independent status of Qawmi Madrasas and spreading religious education.
At this time, the top leaders of Durgapur Upazila and Municipal BNP, its affiliates and affiliates, and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam at the local and district levels delivered speeches. The speakers said that the mass awakening that has emerged from the soil of Durgapur will lay a solid foundation for the democratic movement of the future.
In the last phase of the conference, a special prayer was conducted seeking the welfare of the country and the nation and the unity of the Muslim Ummah. This huge Ulema-Mashaykh conference concluded successfully in a peaceful and orderly atmosphere.
