The 13th National Assembly elections have witnessed major political changes in Gopalganj after three decades. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) candidates have unofficially won all three parliamentary seats in the district, which is being considered as the biggest success of BNP in the history of this district.

BNP-nominated candidate SM Jilani has won the parliamentary seat of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for a long time in Gopalganj-3 (Tungipara-Kotalipara) constituency. According to the results, he was unofficially elected as a member of parliament by getting 60,166 votes. His nearest rival, Hindu Mahajote leader Govinda Chandra Pramanik, got 33,867 votes.

BNP-nominated candidate Selimuzzaman Molya won in Gopalganj-1 constituency by getting 68,867 votes. His main rival, Ganadhikar Parishad candidate Md. Kabir Mia, got 53,961 votes. In addition, BNP's KM Babar, who got 40,048 votes, won the Gopalganj-2 constituency. His main rival in this constituency was BNP's rebel candidate MH Khan Manju, who got 33,039 votes. Since Awami League did not participate in this constituency, the main fight was limited to BNP and its alliance partners.

On Thursday (February 12) night, District Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Md. Arif-uz-Zaman announced the results privately. After the election results, leaders and activists of the district BNP and its affiliates took out a joyous procession. Local leaders commented that the long-standing democratic aspirations of the voters were reflected in this result.

The district administration informed that the entire election process was completed peacefully and there was no major disturbance. The winning candidates expressed their gratitude to the voters and pledged to develop the area and maintain communal harmony in the coming days.
