After securing an absolute majority in the 13th National Parliamentary Election, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Tarique Rahman, has intensified preparations to form a single-party government. All necessary arrangements for forming the new cabinet are progressing rapidly.
Following the publication of the gazette of newly elected Members of Parliament, preparations for the oath-taking ceremony at the National Parliament Secretariat are now in their final stage. Many elected MPs have already arrived in Dhaka, while the rest are expected to arrive within the stipulated time. If everything proceeds as planned, the cabinet may be sworn in on the same evening or the following day. Necessary logistical preparations, including protocol vehicles for ministers, have reportedly been completed.
Party sources say BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman has nearly finalized the list of prospective cabinet members. After a series of consultations with senior leaders, the party is planning to form a competent and balanced cabinet combining experienced and young leadership. Alongside veteran and dedicated politicians, young faces and technocrats may also be included.
Discussions are also underway to include three leaders from allied parties in the cabinet. Those being considered include Andaleeve Rahman Partho, Zonayed Saki, and Nurul Haque Nur. Additionally, despite losing the election, Mahmudur Rahman Manna may be considered under the technocrat quota.
There is also speculation that BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir may receive a key ministerial portfolio. Rumors have even circulated about the possibility of him being nominated as President.
Among senior BNP leaders who are likely to be included in the cabinet are Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Abbas, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, Hafizuddin Ahmed, Selima Rahman, and AZM Zahid Hossain. Some of them may also be inducted under the technocrat quota.
Party insiders further revealed that those being discussed for inclusion under the technocrat quota include Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Habib Un Nabi Khan Sohel, Humayun Kabir, Moudud Hossain Alamgir Pavel, Mahdi Amin, Aminul Haque, and Dr. Ziauddin Haider.
According to constitutional provisions, up to one-tenth of the cabinet members may be appointed from outside Parliament. In a 40-member cabinet, this would allow for a maximum of four technocrats. The final list is expected to be announced on the day of the swearing-in ceremony.
