The Australian government has revoked the visa of popular Bangladeshi religious speaker Mizanur Rahman Azhari. The decision was taken over allegations of hate speech against the Jewish community and praise for Adolf Hitler, according to a report published in international media.
The report published on Wednesday (April 1) said that he was scheduled to visit Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra as part of a series of religious speeches. However, his visa was revoked midway through the tour and he was ordered to leave the country.
The report also said that Azhari has a huge online following and he regularly gives religious talks in different parts of the world, including Asia and the Middle East. However, some of his statements have sparked criticism at the international level.
Senator Jonathan Duniam of the Australian Liberal Party said that warnings had been given from various quarters in advance about Azhari's visit. He mentioned that the relevant ministry had also received the necessary information in this regard.
According to reports, Mizanur Rahman Azhari was banned from entering the United Kingdom in the past. Some of his statements have also sparked controversy in Bangladesh and restrictions have been imposed on his public speaking.
The incident has sparked renewed debate in the social and political arena. However, no official statement has been received from Azhari on the matter yet.
