Lionel Messi has written a new chapter in World Cup history. The Argentine captain broke German legend Miroslav Klose's long-standing record of becoming the highest scorer in the World Cup by scoring twice against Austria.
Messi scored both goals in Argentina's 2-0 win over Austria on Monday. With these two goals, his total number of goals in the World Cup stands at 18. Previously, former German striker Klose was at the top with 16 goals.
The start of the historic match was not good for Messi. Argentina was awarded a penalty in the ninth minute of the match, but Messi could not capitalize on it. However, he overcame the pressure of failure and surpassed Klose by scoring in the 38th minute. Later, he scored another goal in added time to take the record even higher.
Miroslav Klose congratulated Messi after losing the record. The German legend said that Messi is the best footballer of all time in his eyes and congratulated the Argentine star for this achievement.
Klose was the highest scorer in the World Cup with 16 goals since the 2014 World Cup. This time Messi has made that record his own. Despite being 38 years old, his performance on the World Cup stage has proven once again that he is still Argentina's biggest hope in big matches.
With this victory, Argentina moved further forward on the road to the knockout stage. And Messi wrote his name in one of the brightest records in World Cup history.
