The severity of the cold has disrupted public life in the northern district of Kurigram. The icy wind and bone-chilling cold have made life difficult for the people of the district. The entire area has been shrouded in dense fog in the morning and night for several days.
Low-income people, especially the poor and residents of the char areas, are the most in danger due to the outbreak of cold. Many are spending their days in extreme misery due to the lack of winter clothing. The lowest temperature recorded in the district on Monday was 11.5 degrees Celsius.
Subal Chandra Sarkar, officer-in-charge of the Rajarhat Agricultural Meteorological Observatory, said that this temperature illustrates the ongoing cold outbreak in the district. Residents of the char areas along the river banks are spending their days in hardship due to the icy wind. They are also in financial danger due to the lack of work.
Mamun Mia, a resident of Karaibarishal area of Chilmari Union, said,
"When the winter season comes, people in our char areas are in great danger. We can't sleep at night, we can't work. No one has come to give us blankets."
On the other hand, school-going students are also suffering in the winter. Students in Kurigram Municipality said, "It's very difficult to go to school in the morning. But if we don't go to school, our studies will be affected, so we have to go with difficulty."
Meanwhile, the number of cold-related patients is increasing in Kurigram General Hospital and other upazila health complexes. The hospital is getting crowded with patients with problems like diarrhea, pneumonia, cough and fever.
