Jamaat-e-Islami candidate and Supreme Court lawyer Mohammad Shishir Monir in the 13th National Parliament election from Sunamganj-2 (Dirai-Shalla) has set a rare example of following the law. The Election Commission (EC) has ordered potential candidates to take down all types of propaganda materials including posters, banners, festoons within 48 hours of the announcement of the election schedule. Showing respect for this decision, he tore down his own poster with his own hands.
On Friday (December 12) morning, he voluntarily removed the posters he had put up in the Dirai municipality. Not only that, he has also ordered party leaders and activists to remove all posters, banners or propaganda materials that have been put up across the two police stations in his constituency.
Shishir Monir said, “This is a new law and elections in Bangladesh will be held under new rules. So, showing respect for the law, we are taking down our posters ourselves. Not only here, but we are taking responsibility and removing them wherever there is propaganda material in the entire area.”
He also said, “Everyone needs to respect the law. If we obey the law, the country will also move in the right direction. And if we do not obey the law, it will become difficult to fix the country.”
Locals are seeing this incident as a positive example in the election environment. Many have said that the candidates taking this initiative to follow the code of conduct will help make the election more transparent and peaceful.
