120-year-old blind muezzin Abdur Rahman Molla, who used to go to mosque by rope and bamboo in Baraigram, Natore, is no more. He passed away at his home on Sunday (April 5) at around 6:30 pm.
He was a resident of Baradeha village in Nagar Union of Baraigram Upazila. He will be buried at the local graveyard after the funeral prayer at Baradeha Government Primary School grounds at 9 am on Monday.
It is known that Abdur Rahman Molla lost his eyesight in an accident about 22 years ago. Even after that, life did not stop. With an indomitable will, he performed Hajj and built a mosque in his village after returning home. Later, he started serving as a muezzin in that mosque.
However, due to blindness, traveling to the mosque was a big challenge. But he overcame that obstacle too. With the help of his family, ropes and bamboo were hung from the house to the mosque. This devout man used to go to the mosque regularly every day and give the call to prayer using those ropes and bamboos.
Initially, his son and grandsons showed him the way, but he got used to it himself in a short time. After that, he performed his duties without anyone's help until the last day of his life.
His death has cast a shadow of grief over the area. Local MP Abdul Aziz expressed deep grief and said that his dedication and hard work to show people the direction of religion even though he was blind is truly rare and exemplary.
