Donald Trump, who took office as the US president for the second term, has taken initiatives to stop the Ukraine-Russia conflict. In the meantime, a meeting has been held in Riyadh between top US and Russian officials. However, criticism has begun over the organization of this meeting without Ukrainian and European leaders.
In a recent interview with Fox News, Trump criticized French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. He said, "Macron and Starmer have not taken any effective steps to stop the war in Ukraine."
Russia launched a full-scale attack on Ukraine in February 2022. Since then, Western allies including the UK and France have been supporting Kiev. However, both sides have claimed that Trump's recent efforts to stop the war have strengthened the initiative.
European leaders met in Paris for an emergency meeting due to the absence of Ukraine and Europe in the meeting. Trump, while criticizing Macron and Starmer, called them "friends" and "good people."
Macron and Starmer are scheduled to visit the White House next week. The visit is expected to discuss the situation in Ukraine and peace efforts.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a statement that "Europe needs to come together to ensure peace." He also hinted at a deal with the Trump administration on mineral resources.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reiterated his support for Ukraine's sovereignty, saying, "Germany and Europe will stand firm in their positions."
The international community is waiting to see how effective the Trump administration's role in resolving the Ukraine crisis will be.
