Consuming ‘Panchagavya’ mandatory for entry into Gangotri temple: New decision in controversy

A new rule has been introduced for visitors to the holy Gangotri temple in the Himalayan region of India. Now, devotees are required to consume ‘Panchagavya’, which includes cow urine, before entering the temple.
According to a report by Qatar-based media outlet The Independent, the temple authorities in Uttarakhand claim that this is a method of faith verification, through which it will be possible to prevent the entry of ‘non-believers’ or non-Sanatan followers.
Temple management committee chairman Dharmendra Semwal said that this rule should not be a problem for genuine devotees. However, it will act as a barrier for those who want to enter in disguise or without religious beliefs.
Under the new rules, temple workers will provide visitors with ‘holy water’ at the entrance of the temple, which is made from five cow-derived ingredients — milk, curd, ghee, honey and cow urine.
The decision was announced as the annual Hindu pilgrimage, Char Dham Yatra, begins. Lakhs of devotees gather at the Yamunotri temple, Gangotri, Kedarnath temple and Badrinath temple during this yatra.
But the issue has already sparked controversy. Critics say it could narrow religious inclusion and many Hindu devotees may feel uncomfortable with such a requirement.
On the other hand, the use of cow urine has also become a political issue as some groups close to Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party have been promoting its so-called medicinal properties.
Some experts have already warned that there is no scientific evidence to support the health benefits of drinking cow urine. As a result, doubts remain about how effective this rule will be in practice and what kind of reaction it will create among pilgrims.
